Be a Diet Detective
Here are some fantastic tools to help
you get a handle on what you are putting into your body. Remember,
you are what you eat!
The Food Diary
A
great way to get some perspective on what you eat is to keep
a food diary. For seven days
write down EVERYTHING you put into your mouth. Include the time
of day, your mood before and after eating, and any other significant
details.
The Collector
Along with the food diary, for
seven days keep all the packaging from the foods you eat and
drink. If
you use fresh ingredients, make a note of it and include it
in the collection as well.
Why Collect?
1. To get in touch with what you are putting into your
body.
2. To learn to read food labels.
3. To start evaluating what is in the food you are
eating.
4. To see how much fresh food you are consuming versus
processed.
Knowledge leads to empowerment and better choices.
Become a Label Reader!
Ingredients are listed in descending order. Remember
that additives are linked to a variety of health problems such
as headaches, fatigue, nausea and allergies.
Watch for the words:
enriched, hydrogenated, low in fat, sugar-free, transfat.
After
the seven days it is time to face the truth! Is
the majority of the food you consume ...
- Is the majority of your food fresh or processed?
- Do you eat 10-14 servings of fruits and
vegetables a day?
- Do you repeat many of the same foods every
day?
- Are you a junk food junky? a sugar
addict? a
saltaholic?
- Are you craving caffeine?
- Do you drink enough water?
- Are you including organic foods in your
diet?
- Are whole grains on your list?
Did you notice
any connection between how you feel and what you eat?
